With the old world sights and sounds of Konya as a backdrop, students will immerse themselves in a place where wool work is an everyday lifestyle. Carpets, kilims and keçe–not to mention the many other traditional Turkish handcrafts–will surround you as inspiration for your felt work! Hand picked Toros mountain wool is naturally dyed using local plant materials for use in an array of handcrafted (keçe) felt work from Sikes for Semazen to contemporary Osman style felt rugs. Mehmet Girgiç’s shop offers a unique inside look at the daily life of a felt maker.

Durring the felt making workshop, participants will practice creating Traditional, Painterly, or Osman designs using naturally dyed wools. Both folkloric and contemporay hand rolling techniques wýll be taught. Each student will take home their own handcrafted felt rug. Students will also learn about deep rooted Turkish felt traditions and enjoy local cooking. While students are in Konya, they may take time to enjoy the opportunity to visit Mevlana, the Ethnography museum and the quaint Turkish bazzar.
